Western Caspian University to Host the II International Conference "Mountains: Cultures, Landscapes, Biodiversity-2024"

Western Caspian University to Host the II International Conference "Mountains: Cultures, Landscapes, Biodiversity-2024"

On November 25-26, 2024, the II International Conference "Mountains: Cultures, Landscapes and Biodiversity" will take place under the joint organization of Western Caspian University and the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA).

The purpose of the conference:

The II International Conference "Mountains: Cultures, Landscapes, Biodiversity-2024" is a remarkable event envisaged to strengthen connections between knowledge sources and develop ideas, ways and visions for a sustainable future.

The conference covers four main themes, each offering various discussion sessions.

1. Global mountain biodiversity assessment:

This session will explore the comprehensive assessment of biodiversity in mountainous regions, highlighting the importance of protecting these unique ecosystems. Experts from the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment and the Mountain Research Initiative will lead the discussion and present their opinions.

2. Global environmental problems:

Our environment is facing a number of problems, many of which are worsening over time, leading us to a true environmental crisis. Therefore, increasing awareness on the existence of these problems, as well as what measures can be taken to reduce their negative impact become more important.

3. Mountain cultures

Mountain culture is a rich and multifaceted aspect of human history, formed by the unique landscapes and resources of mountain regions. The traditions of mountain communities, including their music, cuisine, festivals or culture, provide a window into their unique way of life.

4. Mountain tourism and economic effects

Mountains are important tourism destinations worldwide and attract visitors for their scenic beauty, sports attractions and rich cultural heritage. Tourism represents a source of income and economic opportunities for remote rural mountain communities. It can also help to revitalize local traditions and food systems.

Besides, sustainable culture and tourism can serve as an important driver of socio-economic development in mountainous areas. Well-managed, community-based tourism increases and diversifies household incomes, develops employment and livelihood opportunities, supports traditional systems, and builds resilience that helps preserve and promote natural and cultural heritage across landscapes.

Unfortunately, populations living in mountain ecosystems are becoming urbanized all over the world for a variety of reasons. In such a situation, entrepreneurs rent these regions and sometimes exploit them without protecting bio- and geo-diversity.

Possible measures to promote the peaceful coexistence of humans and wildlife should include educating and training local communities, establishing a clear boundary between closed areas and resident lands, formulating laws and regulations for local communities, and equitable distribution of profit.

Considering our experience organising the International Conference Mountains Cultures,

Landscapes and Biodiversity, we are excited to announce that this will be an in-person event

with and virtual participation option.

Thus, the 1st International Conference on "Mountains: Cultures, Landscapes and Biodiversity" was held on May 12, 2019 under the organization of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation and the Western Caspian University.
