On November 5-6, 2024, the 2nd International Conference "Mountains: Biodiversity, Landscapes, and Cultures" was held at the Western Caspian University.

This conference, which has wide coverage at the international level, was organized in order to explore the solutions to the existing problems in mountainous areas, protect mountain ecosystems, and ensure their sustainable development. In addition to bringing together scientists and researchers from all over the world, the event created an opportunity for anyone interested in this field to participate. The conference was held in both face-to-face and remote participation formats.

The main discussion topics of the conference were presented in four panels: global mountain biodiversity assessment, global environmental challenges, mountain cultures, mountain tourism, and economic impacts. The purpose of the event was to conduct scientific discussions on mountain biodiversity, ecological problems, mountain cultures, and the economic effects of tourism on mountainous regions, and to evaluate solutions related to these issues. The articles presented at the conference were indexed in "Scopus" and "Web of Science" scientometric databases.

The Western Caspian University, the UN Mountain Cooperation Program, the International Federation of Climbing and Alpinism, and other well-known organizations jointly organized the conference. More than 200 participants attended the event. Among them, internationally known researchers such as Sara Manuelli, coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Program; Mary Sanseverino, Senior Researcher with The Mountain Legacy Project at University of Victoria; Jan Cools, PhD, researcher of the University of Antwerp; Simon Seiichiro Maru, former president of the Japan Olympic Association; and Svetlana Belova, director of the "Machaon International" organization, participated as honored guests. At the same time, more than 70 foreign guests from the United States, Turkiye, Germany, China, and 20 other countries took part in the conference.

The conference was the center of attention of various media organizations as it aroused interest on a wide scale. Many mass media outlets covered the event and conveyed the topics discussed at the conference and the speeches given by foreign guests to the public. This international event, which aims to make important contributions to environmental protection, mountain tourism, and mountain cultures, is expected to be an important step towards protecting mountain ecosystems and environmental protection.
