Western Caspian University employee participated in an international regional event.

Ayaz Mammadov, Head of the Department of Natural Sciences at Western Caspian University, Doctor of Philosophy in Biology, participated in the international event “Regional Adaptation Dialogue on the Cryosphere with a Special Focus on the South Caucasus” in Stepantsminda, Georgia, from May 19 to 23, 2025. The international event was jointly organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Caucasus Mountain Regions Sustainable Development Network”, and the The Mountain Research Institute (MRI).

 

The dialogue was organized on climate change and the changing challenges of the cryosphere at the regional level. The main goal of the dialogue was to identify ways to adapt to changes in snow and ice cover in the region, analyze critical needs in this area, discuss climate scenario forecasts, and exchange experiences.

The event discussed the existing national and regional capacities to monitor and assess glacier and snow cover changes in the South Caucasus region, early warning systems, risk reduction measures, as well as opportunities to increase local resilience. In addition, an open exchange of views was held on water resources management in changing ice and snow conditions, adaptation plans and policies, and methodological approaches to calculating losses and damages related to the cryosphere.

During the event, Ayaz Mammadov made a presentation on the scientific research directions and activities of the Institute of Mountain Biodiversity, Landscape and Culture Research operating under the Western Caspian University, and provided detailed information on the institute's projects contributing to the protection and sustainable development of regional ecosystems
