Conference: International Year of Crystallography

On December 25, 2014 in connection with the International Year of Crystallography, declared by the United Nations, a scientific conference ‘Art & Science: Unity of Purposes and Reflection of World Diversity in Them’ was held at Western University. The Conference was devoted to the memory of the corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Honorary Member of the British Royal Academy, outstanding scholar Hudu Mamedov.

In her opening speech, the Chair of the Department of Design Parvana Aliyeva told the participants about the scientific legacy of distinguished scholar, Hudu Mamedov, and about the connection between his significant scientific discoveries and the art of Azerbaijani carpets. Then, Professor Siyavush Dadashov of Western University gave a scientific research report on the Asymmetry in the Art of Design.

Senior researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Ph.D. in Physics, physical scientist, crystallographer, Imameddin Amiraslanov, presented reports on ‘Crystallography Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ and ‘Crystals, Quasi Crystals and Turkish Folk Art’.

A report on ‘Ornament of Baku Carpets and Unity of Colour’ presented by specialist of the Scientific Cultural Centre of the State Historical-Architectural Reserve under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ulduz Zeynalova and a report on ‘Life Filled with the Ornament Bright as Crystal’ presented by Assistant Professor of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Arts Mammedhuseyn Mammedov attracted the attention of the participants.

Closing the Conference, Associate Professor, Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction, Ph.D. in Architecture Tarana Bekirova who presented a paper on the topic ‘Visual Expression of Mugham’ informed participants about various interesting scientific facts and appreciated the role of Hudu Mamedov in drawing a parallel between art and science.
