Western Caspian University Hosts the 3rd International Conference on “Mountains: Biodiversity, Landscapes and Cultures”
The 3rd International Conference on “Mountains: Biodiversity, Landscapes and Cultures” was held at Western Caspian University on 5–6 November 2026. Dedicated to advancing international scientific cooperation and promoting multidisciplinary research into the ecological, socio-economic and cultural dimensions of mountain regions, the conference brought together scholars and researchers from various countries.
The primary objective of the conference is to foster a comprehensive understanding of mountain regions as natural, ecological, socio-economic, cultural and landscape systems of global significance, facilitate the exchange of scientific knowledge and research findings, and strengthen international academic cooperation. The conference addresses a range of pressing issues, including biodiversity conservation, the impacts of climate change on mountain ecosystems, environmental sustainability, the protection of natural and cultural heritage, the sustainable development of mountain communities, and sustainable tourism.
The conference has attracted considerable interest from the international academic community. More than 300 local and international scholars and researchers have registered to participate, over 100 of whom represent foreign countries. The broad geographical representation and academic diversity of the participants highlight the conference's importance in fostering international scientific dialogue, facilitating the exchange of research expertise, and establishing new collaborative partnerships in the field of mountain studies.
An important factor contributing to the academic standing and international scholarly representation of the conference is the participation of internationally recognized researchers. The event will also feature Western Caspian University professors Bassem Khan, Cem Isik, Muhammet Decechi and Rashid Iqbal, who are included in the World's Top 2% Scientists list compiled by Stanford University and Elsevier. Their participation reflects the University's international research capacity and its commitment to advancing global academic cooperation.mu
One of the key priorities of the conference is the dissemination of scientific findings within the international academic community and the enhancement of research visibility. Continuing the academic traditions established by previous editions, the conference has been registered on international scient metric platforms, and its announcements have been published through the relevant platforms. The materials submitted within the framework of the conference have undergone a scientific evaluation and selection process and have been indexed in the international Scopus database. This is significant in terms of integrating research findings into the global scientific discourse, increasing the international visibility of authors' scholarly contributions, and ensuring broader representation of pressing issues related to mountain regions on the international research agenda.
The conference is organized within the framework of Western Caspian University's cooperation with international and regional partners. Its principal partners include the United Nations Mountain Partnership (UN Mountain Partnership), the Sustainable Caucasus Network for Sustainable Development of Mountain Regions, the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA), and other organizations.
The 3rd International Conference at Western Caspian University represents an important international platform for sharing scientific knowledge and international expertise on the sustainable development of mountain regions, fostering new academic partnerships, and promoting scientific contributions towards addressing global environmental challenges.
