The ecology of the Caspian Sea was discussed at an international scientific symposium.
On October 3, 2025, an International Academic Symposium was held at the Gilazi Scientific Research Base of the Western Caspian University on the topic “Today's Ecology of the Caspian Sea - Restoration or Degradation: Prospects”.
The main goal of the symposium was to comprehensively study the current ecological and bioecological state of the Caspian Sea, discuss the causes and consequences of changes in the ecosystem on a scientific basis, as well as identify opportunities for the restoration and sustainable management of the sea.
Well-known scientists from local and foreign countries, representatives of state institutions and experts working in the environmental field took part in the event.
Dr. Matteo Lattuada, a scientist from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, Akbar Asgarov, Deputy Head of the National Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Asmar Valiyeva, PhD in Ecology of the Western Caspian University, Sheker Mukhtarova, Associate Professor of the Institute of Botany of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, PhD in Biology, Dr. Denis Copilas, a scientist from the Vilnius Nature Research Center (Lithuania), Sevinj Rajabova, PhD in Biology, an employee of the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Aytaj Muradova, PhD student of the Institute of Botany of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Lamia Yaraliyeva, a leading specialist of the Aquaculture Organization Department of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, made speeches on interesting topics. The symposium played an important role in terms of presenting new scientific results and exchanging experiences, especially for young researchers. Relevant issues such as pollution in the Caspian Sea, loss of biodiversity, climate change, anthropogenic impacts and disruption of the natural balance were discussed.
At the same time, scientific discussions were held on the bioecological characteristics of flora and fauna living in the marine ecosystem, population dynamics, interspecific relationships and adaptation mechanisms. During the symposium, new approaches and recommendations were put forward for the protection of aquatic bio resources, ecosystem health and sustainable development.
